Saturday Club Sessions

E-mail Print PDF

Every Saturday Morning 9.30 am—12 noon except Bank Holiday Weekends

Meet at the trailers (White Water Course car park) at 9:30am.

Beginners are welcome Easter to November. We cater for children (9 years +) and adults and are particularly keen to encourage families to join in.

The session is mainly based on the Winfield Pool. This is the small sheltered lake near to Slalom Control at the top of the White Water Course.

If you are new to canoeing you will need to dress in warm light, layered clothing (non cotton as this is very cold when wet!) with a light windproof anorack if it is breezy. Something light for the feet, a change of clothes and a towel.

During the Winter, October to Easter months beginners are encouraged to attend the Notts County Council swimming pool sessions on Saturday afternoons at the Ken Martin Pool at Bulwell to master the basics. Details from George Oliver.

Qualified volunteer coaches staff the Saturday sessions each week and the paddlers are generally split up into similar ability groups to work on skills, go on a river trip, work with specialist boats or do introductory work on the White Water Course when this is available. We do regular BCU star testing sessions.

On weekends when the White Water Course is available for public use there may be organised coaching sessions for novices on the White Water Course if we have enough qualified coaches available.

A Slalom coaching session is normally available on Saturdays for those interested in this discipline.

Safety Intructions

E-mail Print PDF

To ensure your safety please read the following guidelines and check with your instructor if you are unsure about anything:

  • Make sure that you are dressed for the weather and water conditions, the water can be cold at any time of the year and it is very easy to get chilled once you are damp or wet.
  • Don’t wear Jeans as they are very heavy when wet, tracksuit trousers with an old pair of waterproof trousers over the top would be fine.
  • Please bring a lightweight windproof anorak with you to wear to keep the wind off.
  • Please ensure that you wear footwear at all times such as an old pair of trainers, in and out of the boats.  There might be sharp objects hidden under the water.
  • If at any time you feel cold during your session please bring this to the attention of your instructor immediately.
  • Boats are heavy - Please try where possible to have two people carrying each boat, and take care to only lift the boat with a straight back, bend your knees when lifting.
  • Your instructor will give you a safety briefing before you get on the water.
  • If you have any medical conditions please discuss this with your instructor before getting on the water.
  • If you feel unwell at any time please bring this to the attention of your instructor immediately.
  • Please make sure you have a shower at the end of your session and make sure you bring a towel and full change of clothes with you.
  • If you are under 18 then your parents or guardians will have to sign a consent form at your first session.

Enjoy your session and we hope that you will be back for more. Smiley

All sessions are run by BCU coaches or paddlers under the supervision of a BCU coach.
